Raul Bali

Photography, drawing and dark romantic identity

Romania

Raul Bali builds his work around the absurdity and ephemerality of melancholy. Across photography, Polaroid manipulation, drawing, print and illustration, he explores the unstable passage between burning desire and the emptiness that can follow it. Pleasure and loss are not presented as separate states. They become part of the same emotional composition, each giving the other its intensity.

Bali’s imagery operates through an allegory of senses and feelings, holding positive and negative experiences within the same frame. Tenderness can appear inside dark romance, while vulnerability can exist beside confidence, performance or erotic charge. His work is especially attentive to sexual identity, gender fluidity and the visual tension between masculine and feminine forms. These are not treated as rigid categories. Their juxtaposition becomes a way to imagine beauty as something fluid, relational and continually reconstructed.

Material process supports this instability. Polaroid manipulation gives the photographic image a physical fragility, allowing colour, surface and accident to intervene in the recorded moment. Works from the Neon Lights series intensify mood through repetition and chromatic atmosphere, while titles such as Aching Skin, Body Flower, Gender Fetish and Feet place the body at the centre of sensation, identity and symbolic transformation.

For Bali, vulnerability is essential to maintaining balance. It prevents desire from becoming a simple performance of certainty and allows melancholy to remain tender rather than merely dark. His compositions do not attempt to eliminate contradiction. Instead, they make it visible as an ordinary condition of intimacy. The result is a body of work in which attraction, emptiness, softness and self-invention remain in motion, held together by the fragile beauty of emotional exposure.
