Paul Muresan

Paul Mureșan treats drawing as a form elastic enough to contain desire, fear, love, humour and the occasional existential crisis. His practice spans drawing, animation, illustration and film, moving between carefully observed experience and a surreal visual language. The technical control of his images gives their emotional instability a particularly sharp edge. A line may be exact, but the feeling it carries is rarely simple.

Working with ink, graphite and crayons on paper, as well as less conventional surfaces such as sandpaper, Mureșan pays close attention to texture and resistance. The chosen material is never incidental. A rough ground can make a body feel exposed, while a soft field of colour can turn an uncomfortable scene into something tender. His works frequently place humour beside vulnerability, refusing the idea that intimacy has one correct tone or that erotic experience can be separated neatly from embarrassment, affection, play and uncertainty.

His erotic drawings emerge from a direct engagement with intimacy. They can be playful, disarmingly honest, physically charged or unexpectedly quiet. Rather than using the body as a decorative motif, he allows it to become a site where private emotions and larger anxieties meet. Works such as Ropeburn, Wear and Tear, Morning Light and Peeping Tom show the range of this approach, from bodily sensation and domestic observation to fantasy and psychological tension.

Mureșan’s images do not attempt to resolve these contradictions. Their strength lies in letting pleasure coexist with awkwardness, desire with distance, and precision with emotional excess. The result is a body of work that feels personal without becoming closed, inviting recognition while preserving the strangeness of another person’s inner world.
