Maria Brudașcă
Drawing, illustration, animation and printmaking
Romania
Maria Brudașcă approaches drawing as a place where observation and imagination can continually exchange roles. Working with paper, ink and a patient attention to detail, she gathers fragments of the visible world and allows them to acquire new associations. An image may begin with something familiar, but it rarely remains fixed there. Reality becomes porous, memory enters the composition, and the page starts to hold more than a straightforward representation.
Her practice moves between graphic arts, illustration, animation and printmaking. These disciplines share an interest in line, sequence and transformation, yet each gives her a different way to shape an idea. In a drawing, a single mark can carry the tension of an entire scene. In animation, one image can shift into another and reveal how unstable perception can be. Printmaking adds repetition and material process, while illustration allows narrative suggestions to remain open rather than fully explained.
Across works on paper and design objects, Brudașcă returns to the mysterious relationship between what we see and what we carry internally. Her imagery can feel intimate, symbolic or quietly uncanny, inviting the viewer to notice small details before assembling a larger meaning. Titles such as Abracadabra, Misfortune, Whispers, Entangled and Secrets suggest a world shaped by spells, private knowledge and uncertain connections. Even when the composition is precise, it leaves room for ambiguity.
For Brudașcă, paper is not simply a neutral support. It records pressure, gesture and time. Her work respects that physical memory while treating the imagination as an active collaborator, one capable of adding, rearranging and transforming what the eye first encounters.
