Liviu Bulea

Queer drawing, watercolor and embodied desire

Romania

Liviu Bulea’s artistic practice is grounded in queer experience, with a sustained focus on desire, embodiment and the representation of the male body. Through drawing, pen and watercolor, he approaches the body as a site of attraction and vulnerability rather than a stable image to be observed from a distance. His work asks how queer desire is seen, felt and constructed, both within private experience and through broader cultural narratives.

The male form in Bulea’s work can carry a strong physical presence without being reduced to objectification. A gesture, a contour or a field of colour can suggest connection, longing and emotional intensity. Some images are direct, while others remain subtle and atmospheric. This range allows sensuality to coexist with reflection, and it gives the figures room to retain psychological depth beyond the immediate act of looking.

Bulea is particularly attentive to the frameworks that determine which bodies and desires are granted visibility. His practice has a personal and political dimension, informed by his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and by his position within the community. Representation becomes a form of presence. The images acknowledge queer bodies, queer desire and queer ways of relating as valid, complex and worthy of sustained attention, without asking them to conform to normative expectations.

Across works such as Hue and Athlete 3, intimacy, memory and desire overlap. Drawing provides a directness that can register both confidence and hesitation, while watercolor introduces transparency, softness and emotional atmosphere. Bulea uses these materials to build a reflective visual space in which erotic presence is neither hidden nor simplified. His work remains embodied and open, allowing desire to appear as a lived experience shaped by feeling, culture and the continuing need to be seen on one’s own terms.
