Chris Devour

Analogue photography, collage and bodily reclamation

Romania

Chris Devour is a Romanian photographer whose practice combines photography, graphic design and collage. With academic training in International Relations, Security and Diplomacy, Devour brings an awareness of systems, power and social restriction into a visual language centred on the body. The work moves between digital capture and analogue transformation, allowing the image to acquire grain, imperfection and the material weight of a physical photographic object.

This deliberate migration from digital to analogue is central to the practice. A digital photograph is not treated as a finished, frictionless image. Through analogue processes, it becomes vulnerable to texture, interruption and change. These marks oppose the polished neutrality often associated with digital representation, making process visible and returning a sense of physical consequence to the image.

Devour’s work examines self-expression under conditions shaped by traditional patriarchal expectations. Religious iconography and erotic visual language are brought into purposeful contact, not simply to provoke, but to investigate their historical entanglement. Religious frameworks have often governed and pathologised the body while also contributing to its visual eroticisation. By placing these languages together, Devour exposes the contradictions through which bodies are made sacred, shameful, desirable or controlled.

Reclamation is a central concern: the reclamation of the image, the body and the right to self-representation. In the Encounters series, photography becomes a means of negotiating visibility on one’s own terms. Collage and analogue intervention interrupt inherited ways of looking, creating space for a subject who cannot be fully corrected or contained. The result is a practice that connects intimacy with structural power and uses the material photograph as both evidence and resistance.
