Evie Desmarais

Natural-light photography, gender and bodily resistance

Romania

Evie Desmarais is a Canadian photographer currently based in Romania. Alongside her photographic practice, she is pursuing studies in History and Philosophy at a Canadian university. This combination of image-making and critical study informs a practice attentive to the ways bodies are interpreted, disciplined and represented within larger systems of meaning.

Her ongoing work examines the intersection of constraint and desire, focusing on the tensions involved in inhabiting a gendered body under conditions of structural power. Rather than treating the body as a neutral subject, Desmarais considers how it becomes shaped by expectations, correction and social visibility. The photograph offers a space in which those pressures can be made perceptible without reducing the subject to them.

Each image in the Bare Minimum series is produced using natural light and without digital retouching. This method is both aesthetic and conceptual. What is captured in the moment remains present, including the textures and perceived imperfections that digital processes are often used to remove. By refusing correction, Desmarais treats the recorded body as an act of resistance against erasure and against the demand to conform to an imposed visual standard.

Her limited-edition photographic prints explore gender, identity, power and desire through an approach that values material presence and direct observation. Natural light allows the image to retain intimacy without becoming overly controlled, while the absence of retouching protects the specificity of the encounter. Desmarais’s work asks what it means to represent oneself on one’s own terms and how a photograph can acknowledge vulnerability while still holding agency. The result is a practice in which looking becomes inseparable from questions of power, and visibility becomes a deliberate form of presence.
