Elena Preda

Surreal domestic painting and everyday absurdity

Romania

Elena Preda has a particular talent for making the everyday feel slightly suspicious. Her oil paintings often begin with recognisable domestic scenes: a couch, a meal, a television slogan, a lazy afternoon or the remains of a summer day. Nothing initially appears far removed from ordinary life. Then the image tips gently into absurdity, and the familiar room starts to operate according to a logic of its own.

Preda works between personal experience and social observation. Domestic space becomes a stage where intimacy, politics, humour and contemporary anxiety can share the same furniture. Flames may appear where they should not, a dessert may become flirtatious, or a reassuring instruction may feel increasingly impossible to follow. These disruptions are rarely presented as dramatic spectacle. The characters and objects often continue as if everything were perfectly normal, which gives the paintings their distinctive tension.

Works such as Fired, Relax, Seeking Solace and Summer 25 show how Preda uses absurdity to sharpen rather than escape reality. Her scenes feel plausible because their emotional conditions are familiar. Friendship can become an emergency plan. Leisure can carry pressure. Self-care can become another performance. Humour allows these contradictions to remain accessible, but it never empties them of consequence.

Painted in oil on canvas, Preda’s images reward the viewer who notices how small details alter the mood of an entire composition. The ordinary is never simply ordinary, because it carries the beliefs, habits and anxieties of the people who inhabit it. Her work suggests that reality does not need to be completely reinvented in order to become surreal. Sometimes it only requires a careful observation and one well-placed push.
